- Recommended chess computer programs. Click on a program logo to link to web address where you may obtain the program. Linking from my site opens link in a new browser window/tab (unless your browser is set to block new windows/tabs). Close that window/tab to return here (or use your browser’s Back command/arrow). Each link’s web address appears in the link’s “Tool Tip”. Please, note, I recommend Fritz, Shredder, Chessmaster, and other top line programs, but they are widely available so information/links are not provided.

Chess Theatre is a free program from DGT Projects to view & publish PGN chess databases. A great utility program for reading, studying & creating pgn files, or converting pgn files to JavaScript and creating interactive chess boards for HTML pages. Create games or positional problems with variations and lines of play as learning and study aids. Create interactive and static HTML pages for web sites, including live game playing. Multiple capabilities and very user friendly…the one I utilize for my web site. You can utilize the HTMP pages it creates, or with a little HTML, CSS, and JavaScript programming convert them to stylistic pages designed to “fit in” your web site’s design structure, as I have done in my web site. The script coding created by the program, while workable, unfortunately does not validate through The W3C Markup Validation Service (HTML Validator). The reason for this is because within the script coding all the HTML end tags must have the forward slash (\) to validate (e.g., <\/td>). You will have to carefully hand code the forward slash into all the end tags within the script code if you wish your HTML pages to validate. The program comes in both English and German, and you can select which language to use. The program’s web site also has great additional resources including free downloads for tactics and training, interactive problems, two additional programs called MailChess and CompoChess, and some great links. Note: Do not use its “NULL” move. This is NOT an acceptable pgn move coding, and the programs alters/creates the pgn file with author created coding that can be read by some programs, but not others.

One of the most popular chess computer programs available. Enough said.

An excellent online tool by Trent to create chess diagrams for use on the web and otherwise. I highly recommend using this program for quick and easy chess making, downloading, and saving chess diagrams.

FullChess – GUI Smirf Engine is a donationware program by Reinhard A. Scharnagl (free program – the author/creator requests donations be made through PayPal to maintain program development and continue offering the program for free). There is an additional more advanced engine download available, but it is only for project supporters. His site is mainly in German, however the link is to the English page for the program.

FullChess FEN Editor is a freeware program developed by Reinhard A. Scharnagl that I have used and recommend. It appears no longer to be supported or further developed, and is not offered on his current site. The site listed in that program’s “About” (www.fullchess.de/) is no longer available. The program can be used for creating board positions and saving diagrams in GIF and BMP formats, obtaining correct FEN for copying & pasting, as well as creating HTML pages containing a board diagram with the corresponding starting position for the FEN. I have used it in Windows 98 and Windows XP, and it works for me in both those operating systems. Link is to a zip file which you may download and save on your computer the program’s install file (Version 1.3.5 – 0042). Then unzip and run the install file.

Online utility by Douglass Davis allows you to convert Yahoo game results into pgn format. The converter has been updated to work in Firefox, and to permit en passant, for compatibility, allow unfinished games, allow pawn promotion choice, and for saving the resulting pgn file: or you may download from my site a personal Yahoo Game Converter (not by Douglass, I obtained this file a few years ago but do not remember where) to install on your computer (838KB zip file). After download, unzip and run the install file.
